Note(s)The USS Augusta cruisier was moored off the Shanghai Bund when the Sino-Japanese war broke out in Shanghai in August 1937. The cruiser remained there into January 1938, observing the Sino-Japanese hostilities at close range. On 20 August 1937, a Chinese anti-aircraft shell landed amongst the sailors, killing one seaman and wounding several others. At Shanghai Augusta's officers and men could observe the war. Her moorings proved a good vantage point to size up the Japanese Navy and judge how its ships and planes operated.
