Note(s)University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: pe01-036. Photo from an album (UoB reference pe01). It is likely that this scene was arranged so that a photograph could be taken to show how the wooden cage was used. The paper notices (that would have described the unfortunate victim's alleged crimes) are not attached to the cage, as was apparently usually done. This photograph also on an Underwood & Underwood stereo card (c.1900), where it mentions that the photo was taken in Shanghai. Photograph by James A. Ricalton.
