TitleJapanese bombs rain on Shanghai - Aeroplane view
CollectionVirtual Shanghai
LocationUnidentified
Year1937
Date1937
Caption on original imageJapanese aerial activities in the Shanghai district reached their peak on Oct. 5, when naval planes carried out a systematic bombing all the way from Chapel to Lotien, and took in many Chinese villages and military concentration points well behind the lines. This picture shows a fire which folloed bombs dropped near the Commercial Press building in Paoshan Road, Chapel. Slightly to the right, above the smoke, can be seen the North Administration building and the station itself. Upper left corner is the junction of the Soochow Creek and the Whangpoo, with the Broadway mansions cutting off a view of the Garden Bridge. The road on the left from top to bottom, is North Szechuen Road, while the straight black way towards the centre is the Shanghai-Woosung Railway. All this area has been the scene of bitter fighting during the past few days.
