Note(s)This memorial was built in 1922 by the Japanese Naigai Wata Cotton Mill Company to honor its long-time Shanghai director, Kawamura Okada, for his achievements for the company in Shanghai. With the approval of the Shanghai Municipal Council, it erected a tower-like construction with a clock in the Western district of the International Settlement, the area where Naigai Wata Cotton Mill Company had several cotton mills. The memorail came to be known as the 大自鸣钟 (Self-awakening clock) by the Chinese population, most of them workers who woke up at the sound of the clock. 内外棉株式会社（简称“内外棉”）是中国日商在华最大的棉纺织业集团公司，l887年创办，总部设在日本大阪。早期的“内外棉”主要在上海收购原棉，运回日本后加工成棉制品销往中国和其他国家。从1901年起，“内外棉”就在上海及中国其他城市创办分店或支店，1911年，“内外棉”董事长川村利兵卫以日本纺织设备为主，在上海小沙渡（今西康路旧名“小沙渡路”，“小沙渡”泛指今长寿路以北，西康路附近的地方）创办“内外棉”在上海的第一家工厂，至 1922年，“内外棉”在上海的棉纺厂就有l l家，计有纺织机3000台左右，同时还在上海创办了与纺织相关的机器厂，成为在中国最大的纺织集团公司。 1922年，川村利兵卫已到了退休的年龄，“内外棉”为了表彰和纪念川村利兵卫在上海的“丰功伟绩”，经公共租界工部局同意，在“内外棉”工厂最集中的沪西小沙渡路劳勃生路（西康路长寿路）十字路口建一“川村纪念塔”，该纪念塔实际上是上狭下宽的方锥形纪念碑，碑的上方嵌一只自鸣钟，于是该碑也被叫作“大自鸣钟纪念碑”。以前，中国的工人当中，几乎没有人家中会拥有钟，更不可能拥有表，这只“大自鸣钟”就时刻提醒工人——千万不能误了上班时间。当然，这里也被人们叫作“大自鸣钟”。 　　1945年日本战败后，“内外棉”作为敌产由新组建的“中国纺织建设公司”接管，工厂按原序号更名为“中国纺织建设公司上海第X厂”，解放后又按原序号改名为“国营上海纺织×厂”，如原“内外棉第一厂”在1945年后改名为“中国纺织建设公司上海第一厂”，解放后又改名为“国营上海棉纺织一厂”（简称 “国棉一厂”）。川村纪念碑在解放初拆除。 摘自薛理勇著, 《街道背后》, 同济大学出版社2008年版.
