AbstractThe Toa Dobun Shoin, or East Asia Common Culture Academy, was opened in Shanghai by Japan's East Asia Common Culture Society and operated from 1900 to 1945. It recruited students from all parts of Japan to study the Chinese language and culture and had close relations with Japan's government, which supported and administered it. its students collected intelligence on Chinese politics, economy, and military affairs, then reported the information to the Japanese government. Some students worked as interpreters in Japan's army, and some served in Japan or the puppet regime during the 2d Sino-Japanese War, in both cases thereby directly taking part in Japanese aggression against China.
