AbstractThe fight against epidemic encephalitis B in China in the 1950's was the first battle in the integration of Chinese and Western medicine in combatting epidemic disease. It began at Shanghai's Shijiazhuang Hospital for Infectious Diseases, which treated epidemic encephalitis B by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) but following Mao Zedong's 1954 instruction calling for close cooperation between Chinese and Western medicine with good organization and leadership. TCM physicians' application of traditional principles was questioned, and in August 1955 the Ministry of Public Health dispatched an inspection team to investigate the reliability of clinical diagnosis and treatment in cases of encephalitis B in the Shanghai hospital. in the process of disseminating the experiences of Shijianzhuang, TCM practitioners began to emphasize the differentiation of treatment of epidemic encephalitis B and to discourage the mechanical application of the experiences of a certain unit.
