AbstractThe battle of Muddy Flat, Shanghai, 1854, between imperial forces and foreign troops, was a minor two-day skirmish, part of the, also minor, history of the Small Sword Society. As the Chinese lost, there is little on this battle in Chinese records and scholarship. Most material is in English, including a map (reproduced here) in G. Lanning and S. Couling's the History of Shanghai (1921). This small incident deserves to be studied by scholars of the history of treaty port foreign concessions.
