AbstractThe Shanghai working class was concentrated into three types of factories: those owned by foreign imperialists, those established by the Qing government, and those owned by the Chinese bourgeoisie. Early labor organizations were like guilds, possessing tutelary deities and temples as their centers. With the formation of the Chinese Communist Party, however, these organizations (as well as early company unions) lost influence.
