AbstractWomen from the United States and Western Europe who worked as prostitutes were able to enjoy privileged status among sex workers in the treaty ports of 19th- and early-20th-century China. While Western reformers voiced sympathy for Asian and White Russian prostitutes, these "American girls" were condemned as a threat to Western cultural superiority. Appendix provides list of European and American prostitutes.
