AbstractOpen currency markets and a free trade policy in Hong Kong after World War II gave it great economic advantages over Shanghai, whose government-controlled import-export trade could not compete with the British colony. Complex ongoing negotiations between Chinese, Hong Kong, and English authorities to develop financial and trade agreements never reached a complete solution to these problems. A deteriorating Chinese economy and a collapsing Nationalist government created general chaos during this period.
