AbstractThe urbanization of Shanghai was the product of the treaty port system established by the colonial powers in the 1850's. It became the center of manufacturing, banking, foreign trade, education, and publishing. From 1949 to the mid-1970's it was viewed by the new Chinese regime as the very image of capitalist, bourgeois, and antirural values, and there was a sharp decrease in population growth. Since the late 1970's, however, Shanghai has again been considered an industrial center of high technical level and productivity which must be favored due to its geographic and socioeconomic advantages, which persist in spite of such problems as the inadequacy of its harbor, the shortage of housing, environmental pollution, and generally poor urban services.
