AbstractExamines the involvement of the Green Gang, and specifically its leader Du Yuesheng (Tu Yueh-sheng), with the French Tramways Union (FTU). Particularly noted is the changing relationship of the Green Gang and organized labor in Shanghai between 1927 and 1932. Because the gang's main district was in French Concession, which was where the FTU operated, the activities of the union were of immediate relevance to the gangster's leadership. An attempt is made to shed some light on the complex relationship between French authorities and the Green Gang.
