AbstractExamines the experience of the Japanese Residents' Association of Shanghai during the 1900's-40's. The Japanese community imagined itself as extrinsic to Shanghai itself, to the extent that its members called it "the city of Shanghai in the prefecture of Nagasaki," and it constituted itself differently in Shanghai than in other Chinese cities, such as Tianjin. The article discusses the ways in which the Japanese community responded to Chinese nationalism, whose strong anti-Japanese sentiment came as something of a shock to local Japanese.
