AbstractIn the West, bourgeois class development was self-initiated, and accumulated capital sustained both industry and commerce. Because of China's semicolonial status, the "hair" of commercial capitalist development was rooted in the "skin" of foreign trade. The 1883 financial disturbance in Shanghai, caused primarily by crop failure and famine in the interior, underscored the weakness of China's attempts to accumulate investment capital for both commerce and industry.
