AbstractUses Shanghai as a case in point to illustrate how the development of a modern city is intertwined with that of its peripheries. After becoming an international trading port in 1843, Shanghai stimulated population and industrial growth in its neighboring rural areas. It not only changed the social and economic makeup of these areas but bonded the rural and the urban to form an inseparable economic operative unit.
