AbstractThough enshrined in fiction, film, biography, and history, the infamous "Dogs and Chinese Not Allowed" sign, posted outside a park in Shanghai, never existed. The myth does reflect the exclusionist attitude of Shanghai's foreign community, and the sign continues as an icon of China's recent past.
