Biographical informationFew details are known of the life of Friedrich Schiff, one of the great cartoonists of Shanghai between the World Wars. He was born in 1908 in Austria and moved to Shanghai in 1929. He returned to Austria in 1947, and died there in 1968. In 1929, Schiff came to Shanghai to escape the Nazi persecution. During his 18 years' stay in the city, Schiff drew many cartoon pictures with the theme of "I love the Chinese people." A collection of his works was published in Austria in 1985 under the name China gemalt - Chinesische Zeitgeschichte in Bildern Friedrich Schiff.
