CommentsThis map is a partial assemblage of a series of 14 maps (of which so far only 8 are extant [see Maps ID 765-772])that were established for the purpose of signing an agreement of ceasefire between the Chinese and Japanese military forces after the January-March 1932 conflict in and around Shanghai. The missing parts are indicated on the basis of the overview sketch provided on Map ID 770 (also on this assemblage). These maps were annexed to the official agreement. Each map bears the signatures of the two parties involved represented by G.K. Wang, Lieutenant general (Chinese delegate) and K. Tashiro, major general (Japanese delegate), and Western official witnesses A. Bonavita, Lieutenant colonel, W.S. Drysedale, Lieutenant colonel, two more [unreadable signatures]. These maps provide a detailed view of the countryside north of Shanghai, mostly Jiangwan, Wusong, and Baoshan (see map ID 770 for an overview map). This was the area where the two armies fought each other. For the urban area, these documents are quite unique. They present a mix of cartographic representation. The International Settlement is represented as a cadastral map (Northern and eastern districts). The Chinese-administered area - Zhabei - is represented as a detailed street map. As far as we could ascertain, this is the most detailed and accurate map available of the Zhabei area ever found in libraries or archives.
