This shapefile provides the location of 756 performance sites (movie theater, theater, music hall, etc.) that existed in Shanghai between 1907 and 1966. It is based on the data extracted from the four volumes edited by Jiang Jin (East China Normal University), 二十世纪上海报刊娱乐版广告资料长编 1907-1966 / Er shi shi ji Shanghai bao kan yu le ban guang gao zi liao chang bian, Shanghai, Shanghai wenhua chubanshe 上海文化出版, 2015. Christian Henriot compiled the data into a database. The database is currently available online only in Filemaker format with limited search capabilities. It should migrate soon to a new Heurist database system.

The 756 performance sites in this shape file do not represent alll the performance sites  that ever existed in Shanghai during this period. On the one hand, we were unable to locate certain sites due to the lack of proper information, inadequate maps, or sheer absence of cartograpic material for the earlier period (19th century). On the other hand, the four volume documented only the facilities that published advertisements in the press. We believe that what may have been lost is marginal in view of the wealth of materials collected in four daily newspapers over sixty years.
