Description

This vector map represents the 46 census blocks and 43 census blocks, respectively for the 1930 and 1935 population surveys in the International Settlement. The Shanghai Municipal Council divided its territory into block units based on tax collection for the sake of surveying its population. The Financial bureau was in charge of establishing the list of residents (households) to be surveyed. The Shanghai Municipal Police distributed and collected the census forms.

Unfortunately, the original census forms are missing, at least to this day. All we have are summary tables that can still be projected on the survey maps.

The shape files are compiled in the "FS_IS_CENS_DISTRICT_1935.zip" file.

The full metadata for this map canbe found in the Base Maps section under ID 396.
