Texts & data
Texts
The Virtual Shanghai project is an ongoing effort to write the history of the city from its origins to the present, with a particular focus on the 19th and 20th centuries. This section provides access to:
-
Papers – original scholarly essays
-
Appendices – original documents in textual, visual, audio, or video form
-
E-Library – a digital library of Shanghai-related books
All the texts and documents presented in this section are available free of charge. Yet they are also protected by intellectual copyrights and shall be given due credit when quoted. The purpose of the “Virtual Shanghai” project is to provide a site of reference to scholars, students, and the general public in the spirit of the OAI. It supports the aim of direct scientific communication and general circulation of knowledge for the purpose of education and research.
Section Overviews
Papers
This section features scholarly essays on a range of topics. Most eventually appear in revised form in peer-reviewed publications, but the platform versions take full advantage of digital possibilities—linking texts with other texts, with images, with maps, and with visual narratives. Our aim is to create a seamless experience, allowing users to move freely between different components of the platform.
Appendices
Here you will find original documents—mainly textual sources—used and cited in the main essays. These may include visual, audio, and video materials not directly related to Shanghai, which are therefore not part of the dedicated media collections. The section also contains Roadmaps: thematic guides that bring together all relevant entries, resources, and “gateways” for a given research topic. They offer readers a navigational tool without imposing a fixed order of consultation.
E-Library
Provides access to digitized books (PDF format) on the history of Shanghai, in various languages. The E-Library connects directly to the digital collections of the BN-Asie, the digital library of the Institut de recherches asiatiques (Institute of Asian Research).
Data
In the course of research, Virtual Shanghai has generated substantial statistical datasets. Some have been published in books and articles, while others remain unpublished and difficult to access. Many of these datasets, carefully compiled and verified, may be relevant for projects beyond their original scope.
This section makes such datasets available in tabular format (Excel files) with complete metadata, ready for download. We also provide under Data the vector layers of the maps that we have redrawn from historical sources with GIS tools. This section includes our database of Shanghai buildings (1,808 items) with their address and geocoordinates.
Although distinct from statistical data, we also provide historical and edited maps in KMZ format for use in Google Earth.
