摘要Examines the use of print media by Shanghai artists of the late 19th century, especially newspapers such as Shenbao [Chinese daily news]. Shanghai had a diverse artistic community and a burgeoning print industry. Although Shenbao was established by two Englishmen in 1872, it was run by their Chinese employees and featured literary pages from its inception. Shanghai artists not only advertised their work in newspapers but also publicized themselves as personalities by submitting both poetry and prose. Shenbao's journalistic reporting on disasters inspired its associated merchants and artists to form fundraising societies for disaster relief. Artists often donated artwork to be sold through fan shops to raise relief aid. Shenbao advertisments for relief-donated artwork were unusual in providing prices, sizes, formats, locations to buy, and mail-order options.
