摘要Transnational processes involved in strikes & worker-citizen protests are explored via consideration of four movements in Shanghai, China, in light of the 1871 Paris (France) Commune & post-WWI Paris peace talks: the May Fourth Movement of 1919; the May Thirtieth Movement of 1925; & the Three Armed Uprisings of 1926/27, the Cultural Revolution of the mid-1960s, & the June Fourth Incident of 1989. International ideas & actions shaped the motivations & methods of Chinese workers & students involved in these movements, while the Chinese experiences in turn impacted developments elsewhere. General strikes arise under the leadership of outside organizers, & their goals tend to transcend the workplace so that cross-class alliances, eg, between workers & intellectuals, can emerge. The success of the general strike depends on the social networks & collective identities of the protesters. M. Pflum.
