It was built in 1917 and was the first recreation ground in Shanghai, giving a decisive turn to the reputation of the French concession, because it became the preferred meeting point of famous bandits. Moreover it changed its façade three times, in 1924 and assuming the last one in 1931, and that one of the surrounding area that became completely commercial.
