Note on images: These images come from the online photographic collection of funeral artefacts collected by J.J.M. De Groot held by the Volkskunde Museum in Leiden. These photographs were downloaded before 2014 when the original web site was merged with that of another institution. Until then, I followed the indications given by Barend ter Haar (see below). Unfortunately, the link below no longer works and it has proved impossible to return to the original links of the collected images. Moreover, the quality of the images is very low. The Volkskunde Museum has done a very poor job to make this invaluable collection to the public, both due to the low resolution of images and for not guaranteeing the continuity from one web site to the other. It is not even possible to identify the items related to the De Groot collection on the current web site.

Barend ter Haar:

"See at wwwrmv.nl > collectie > website database. The descriptions of the de
Groot collection are largely in Dutch (unlikeW erblowsky'sc atalogue).T he material
can be found by searching in the "uitgebreid" (advanced) version of the database,
entering the date "1886" (the first year of de Groot's second stay in China) under
"datering" (dating) in the field for "uitgebreid zoeken" (advanced search). The next step is to refine the search according to "geografische herkomst" (geographical provenance)
to "Oost-Azie" (East Asia)."

J. J. M. De Groot (Johann Jacob Maria) stayed in China on two occasions, first from February 1877 to February 1878, then from 1886 to 1890. He was also an avid collector of artifacts. On his life and achievements, see R. J. Zwi Werblowsky, The Beaten Track of Science: The Life and Work of J.J.M. de Groot (Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz, 2002); and the excellent informative review by Barend ter Haar, “Review,” T’oung Pao 92, no. 4–5 (2006): 540–60.
