摘要Looks at how schools in China faced financial hard times that forced closings and teachers into unemployment after the Revolution of 1911. Soon thereafter, the government stipulated how much teachers and administrators were to be paid, and schools increasingly reopened. in Shanghai, salaries improved, especially as the city grew into a large, wealthy metropolis, and even after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. These salary increases improved faculty retention. University professors enjoyed the highest salaries while elementary and middle school teachers received the lowest. Nevertheless, faculty retention remained high in Shanghai, where there was much more stability than in other areas as a result of regularly paid salaries.
