| | Rules and conditions for the reproduction of photographs and mapsAll documents are available free of charge as they appear on the Virtual Shanghai platform. If used on another web site, we shall appreciate proper credit. While we are glad to make these materials available to all Internet users, we are not a “service provider” for individual users, nor a research service for personal queries. All documents are generally stored in high-resolution format for the purpose of digital archiving. Such high-resolution files may be made available for academic research to scholars and graduate students, as well as for publication by academic presses.
Rules for photographs:
General: all images are either free of copyright or owned by private individuals. In the latter case, permission to use them for publication will require the agreement of the owner. Such permission will be requested through our service. In the case of copyright-free photographs (and privately-owned pictures for which permission has been granted) we do not charge any copyright fee. However, because retrieving these pictures from the datasets and reproducing them is time-consuming, we charge a service fee covering labor cost. For conditions, please contact us at virtualshanghai@ish-lyon.cnrs.fr. Particulars for commercial publishers: this platform was created and developed for scholarly purposes. We cannot afford the manpower to serve all incoming requests for the reproduction of documents. When we actually did provide photographs to commercial publishers, they never paid for the service rendered to them – Felony & Mayhem Press – As a result, we no longer accept requests from any commercial publisher or magazine.
Rules for maps:
Maps are available only for academic research by scholars and graduate students. We do not provide reproductions of maps, even when we own the rights or when they are copyright-free. Most maps come from institutions from which copies may be requested. For the sake of research, however, we are prepared to facilitate the access to our map collection in digital format: original maps; georectified maps; self-produced maps; base maps (territorial divisions). A formal contract will be established to define the conditions under which the reproduced maps can be used. All requests for the reproduction of either photographs or maps shall be made through the following online form. Applications by graduate students must be accompanied by a letter/email from their advisor (). The delivery of documents will be made after the payment of the reproduction fee has been received.
