Biographical information

UENO Hikoma (1838-1904), the pioneer Japanese photographer, was born in Nagasaki.  He was a commercial and artistic success, noted for his fine portraiture.  Ueno opened branch photographic studios in Shanghai and Hong Kong in 1891.  The portrait studios in Shanghai were at 16 Foochow Road and at 100 Boone Road, Hongkew, and traded under the name H.Uyeno.
