CommentsThis map shows the distribution of the major accidental and deliberate bombings of civilians at the beginning of the Sino-Japanese war in Shanghai. The unintended August 14 bombing resulted from defective bombing technique by Chinese pilots. The August 23 bombing remains unclear, even if the Chinese claimed the bombs fell from a Japanese plane. The September 28 bombing was a deliberate air raid on civilians at the South Station by Japanese planes. This map is associated to a book chapter that examines the issue of death en masse in wartime Shanghai.
