This map represents the 43 census blocks of the 1935 population survey in the International Settlement. The Shanghai Municipal Council divided its territory into block units based on tax collection for the sake of surveying its population. The Financial bureau was in charge of establishing the list of residents (households) to be surveyed. The Shanghai Municipal Police distributed and collected the census forms.

Unfortunately, the original census forms are missing, at least to this day. All we have are summary tables that can still be projected on the survey maps.

The shape files are compiled in the "FS_IS_CENS_DISTRICT_1935.zip" file.

The map image shows the census blocks numbered as in the original census documents.
