Raster Data

Vectorial Data

Warning: due to a recent update of the Linux software on our server, a conflict with ArcIMS makes it impossible to display map rasters. As we are shifting to a new web software for the GIS interface, the current display will remain unchanged. Sorry for the inconvenience and please bear with us. In a few weeks, the "Living Maps" section should be up and running again.

"Live Maps" is the GIS platform where we offer access to georectified maps, but also where we combine various elements of data to produce maps "on the fly". Apart from producing maps based on pre-selected data, "Live Maps" includes other features. The first one is a timeline. Only the items selected for a given period will show on the maps (e.g. "schools" in 1910-1925). Each physical element like buildings, parks, etc. -- whenever this is known -- is determined by a "date of construction" and "date of destruction" (or change of function). The second feature is the link between these physical elements and the photographic database. All such identified elements in the photographic database will appear with all their associated pictures and actual location on any georectified map in Virtual Shanghai.

This platform is under construction. It is meant to offer new features as it develops. Tentatively, these features can be defined as follows:

- a sample of around 30-40 georectified maps of Shanghai

- three complete sets of digitized and georectified atlases for the 1940s and 1980s

- a complete set of "base maps" representing the territorial divisions (districts, police or census districts, etc.) ever drawn on Shanghai between 1849 and today. We plan to provide an interactive tool to produce maps with any kind of data related to these territories. This will be made available for students and scholars working with data related to Shanghai.

- a database of all street names between 1849 and today, with a link to their actual location on any georectified map in Virtual Shanghai.

- sets of of street grids in vectorial form for various periods.

How to use "Live Maps"

There are two ways to access SIG data on this server:

  • With the complex HTML viewer developed at ISH: this viewer is the most elaborate form of access to the "Live Maps". It allows you to see the Rasters (digitized original maps), Vectorial Data (redrawn maps) and Images (mostly photographs) within the same interface while using a TimeLine to define the periods of time that are relevant for your topic.

  • With the simple ArcIMS HTML viewer: • With the simple ArcIMS HTML viewer: it provides access only to the Rasters (digitized original maps)
    and Vectorial Data (redrawn maps)

General explanation for the complex HTML viewer

The “Data information frame” has four headings: Search, Images, Time, and Typology.

Search allows you to search the whole image database (photographs of Shanghai). You can either search all the fields (default) or choose the specific field you target. The first three entries are not searchable. For time periods, date refers to the exact year (ex. 1933); estimated period refers to approximate dates. The data is organized by periods of ten years. Searching should be expressed in the following way:

1900-1903 will include all the images between 1900 and 1903

1900-1909 will include all the images between 1900 and 1909

1900-1925 will include all the images between 1900 and 1929

1881-1936 will include all the images between 1880 and 1939

Images allows you to see all the available images related to the buildings or scenes identified and located on the maps. As this is under construction, only a part of the collection is available.

Title: gives the title attributed to the photograph
Building:gives the name of the specific building(s) shown on the photograph. A click on the name will upload all the images related to the same building
Type: indicates the category of building (ownership, use)
Go to this location: this will transport you directly to the location of the building on the georeferenced maps of Shanghai

Time allows you to see the process of construction (blue line with orange filling) and destruction (empty blue line) of the buildings for which we know their life course. The timeline allows you to define the period that you wish to observe by clicking left or right of the black line to choose the “start” and “end” period your search. If you choose the “Query” mode, apart form the localization of the buildings on the map, you will get a table with the data related to these buildings. To come back to the original timeline, just click again on Time in the toolbar.

Typology provides the categories under which the buildings and locations are organized. This typology is tentative. It will evolve both to include thiner layers and to differentiate between buildings as physical entities and buildings as functional entities (the same building may have been used for different purposes and by different owners over time).

Layers

The layers represent data (ex. “Buildings”), original maps (“Map” followed by its name) or redrawn maps. By default, all layers are selected. To change the layout, simply select or unselect entries and click on “Refresh Map”

The following maps have been used for georeferencing (more will be made available soon):
