Plot北宋末年，金兵入侵，士人程鹏举和少女韩玉娘被金兵俘虏，发配到张万户家为奴，并在“俘虏婚姻”制度下结为夫妇。玉娘鼓励丈夫逃回故土，投军抗敌。她在丈夫逃走后，历尽磨难，流落尼庵，辗转重返故国。程鹏举因抗金有功，出任襄阳太守，后赖一鞋为证，得与玉娘重圆，但玉娘已卧病不起，憾然而逝。 生死恨》剧本是根据京剧剧本重加整理而成。原剧本36场，删为19场，结局由团圆改为死别。《生死恨》较梅兰芳过去所拍的影片，各方面均有进步。他的圆润唱腔，优美身段，富有内心感情的眼神和面部表情，在银幕上别具魅力。特别是洞房、尼庵、夜诉、梦幻等场，表演深刻，传达了人物心理和性格。 影片用16厘米彩色影片摄制，再放大成35厘米标准影片。又因摄制时灯光不足，色温不稳定，缺乏拍摄彩色片的经验，以致影片的彩色不够理想。
